Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) Q & A

Question:
What is the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE)?
Answer:
Q. What is the CPCE?
                A. The CPCE is an exit exam and preparatory for the National Counselor Examination (NCE), which is required for licensure in most states and addresses the core areas of competency assessed on the NCE. Students in University of Phoenix counseling programs must take the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE).

Q. Is the CPCE required?
                A. Yes, it is a program requirement and students cannot receive their diploma without a passing score on file.

Q. What is a passing score?
                A. The passing score is a raw score of 62 or higher. This is not a percentage, but the number of questions answered correctly.

Q. Is the CPCE exam hard?
                A. Level of difficulty is subjective. It is recommended students prepare and study for the exam prior to registering.

Q. What resources are there to study for the CPCE exam?
                A. Students can refer to the CCE (Center for Credentialing and Education) website: https://www.cce-global.org/. Students can also refer to the Howard Rosenthal Study Guide.

Q. When can the student take the CPCE exam?
                A. Students are eligible once their practicum course begins. It is recommended that students try their 1st attempt of the exam by the end of Internship A.

Q. How many attempts do students have to take the exam?
                A. There is no limit to attempts, students take the exam until they pass. There is a limit of 3 attempts where the University pays for the exam. After 3 attempts it is the responsibility of the student to pay for the exam.

Q. How does the student ensure that the 3 attempts are paid for by the University?
                A. When the Practicum course starts, the student is sent an email advising of the steps to register with the CCE. Once registered, they will receive an authorization to test email that contains the “Candidate ID number”. Once the student has the Candidate ID number they need to email that to their Field Placement Coordinator (FPC) so the University can provide the student with a Voucher number. Once they have the Voucher number, they will register with Pearson Vue and select the exam date. Pearson Vue will send a location to take the exam. The Voucher number is valid for 3 months before it expires. Once the number expires, that is considered an attempt. If the student sets up an exam date and cancels or changes the date, that is considered an attempt and are subject to a $50 charge by Pearson Vue. If the student takes the exam and does not receive a passing score, that is also an attempt.

Q. Does the test results get sent to the university?
                A. Yes, however, it can take several weeks before we receive the results. Students can send a copy of their raw score report since the results are automatic for students. Once the university has a copy of the score report, the student's file is notated showing completion of the CPCE exam.

Q. Is the CPCE the only exam I need to take for their counseling program?
                A. Yes, the CPCE is the only exam required for University of Phoenix counseling programs.  Please refer to the University State Disclosure link to view state requirements: https://www.phoenix.edu/colleges/college-of-humanities-and-sciences/state-requirements.html
