California Public Health Courses in BSN Programs

Question:
What is required of California residents in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs when taking the public health courses?
Answer:
Students who live and are licensed in California, regardless of the campus/modality they attend, are required to successfully complete 45 hours of faculty-verified clinical work (depending on their program/version), with appropriate clinical agencies and families as part of the course requirements for each of the two (2) public health courses in their program. Students must log all clinical hours and submit a cumulative log as hours/activities are completed. A cumulative log with the minimum number of hours must be submitted by the end of the course. Failure to submit a complete and accurate clinical log, along with all clinical activities, will result in a failed grade

BSN v14 and 15: NSG/478CA and NSG/485CA (45 hours each)
BSN v16: NSG/486CA and NSG/482CA (45 hours each)
P/VN/BSN v3: NSG/450 and NSG/420 (45 hours each)
P/VN/BSN v4: NSG/452 and NSG/421 (45 hours each)

Each clinical experience plan will be customized to maximize student learning in the community, with families and in appropriate clinical agencies. Students need to arrange their clinical experiences to meet the specific clinical hour requirement and the clinical objectives for the course. Please be advised that students will likely be working with more than one agency in order to meet the different clinical objectives. In week 1 of each public health course, students will be responsible for working with their faculty member to create a clinical experience proposal that outlines their plan for the rest of the course. Students may not begin any class assignment that involves a facility or family without first obtaining faculty approval. The proposal must include:
  • Clinical agency/agencies they will be using. This includes the family they are interacting with for the Healthy Communities class (NSG/478CA; NSG/482CA; NSG/420; NSG/421).
  • Outline of planned activities
  • Estimated hours associated with each clinical experience
Agency Options
Students are sent a list of the clinical objectives for each public health course 6-9 weeks prior to the scheduled start date. They can also access a list of possible facilities to use, and with some of these site we have an affiliation agreement established (noted in spreadsheet). Because agencies can fill up, students are highly encouraged to contact their preferred facilities as soon as possible, to ensure there is space available. Students can access the up-to-date list at ACEMAPP under the Student Tab.

Students in the P/VN/BSN programs are required to use agencies with which we have an affiliation agreement. CA regulations require that pre-licensure students complete clinical hours only at facilities where an affiliation agreement exists.

Students in the RN to BSN programs are allowed to use any appropriate agencies as long as those agencies will allow the student to fulfill the clinical objectives for class, and as long as each agency gives approval. Students should use agencies where affiliation agreements already exist or no affiliation agreement is necessary when possible. Students must get an Agency Permission Agreement form signed by any facility they use if we do not have an affiliation agreement with that agency.

Affiliation Agreements for RN to BSN v14, 15, 16 students
If a student absolutely must use an agency that requires a new affiliation agreement, they will need to reach out to a College representative to start that process.

For Online students, a representative can be reached via email at HealthSciencesandNursing@phoenix.edu

For Local students, the contact is the clinical coordinator for their campus
  • This process can take months to achieve, so it’s best to use a facility that does not require an agreement or one where we already have an agreement in place.
Affiliation Agreements for P/VN/BSN v3, 4 students
If students need to use an agency that does not already have an agreement with University of Phoenix, they will need to reach out to the clinical coordinator at their local campus to start that process.
  • This process can take months to achieve, so it’s best to use a facility where we already have an agreement in place. If that is not possible, it’s best to start the affiliation agreement request process as soon as possible.

When submitting an affiliation agreement request, students need to provide the following information:
Student name:
Student IRN #:
Student phone number:
Student e-mail address:
Name of agency for affiliation agreement:
Address of agency:
Contact person at agency:
Phone number of contact person at agency:
E-mail address of contact person at agency:
Are you employed by this agency?
