Requirements Around Grading

Question:
What are the requirements around grading?
Answer:
  • Faculty ownership of grades
    • The faculty owns the grade in all instances and must confirm all grade changes.
  • Instructor feedback
    • The qualitative feedback rubric for faculty consists of three categories of feedback described as corrective, informative, and Socratic (reflective) feedback. The concept of these categories, along with an additional element of encouragement and recognition, forms the foundation of expectations for the quality of feedback provided to students by faculty members.
  • Rubrics
    • Rubrics are highly recommended by each college, but they are not required.
  • S and U designation for discussion questions
    • This tool is available for faculty to use, but it is not a requirement.  The use of this feature is based entirely on faculty preference.
  • Weekly feedback
    • Weekly feedback is considered timely when provided to the student no later than six days after the end of the week in-question.
  • Student disagreement with grades in classroom
    • The student should ask his or her faculty member about the grade immediately after receiving feedback. The question asked needs to be posted by Private Message and be as detailed as possible.
  • Grading APA formatting
    • APA is the preferred style for academic writing at the University. Instructors are encouraged to use the Writing & Style Expectations by Degree Level, found in the University Library.
  • Instructors grading hard
    • How an instructor grades is up to the discretion of the individual instructor. The demanding or difficult grading of an instructor is based on the perception of the individual student.
Note: Faculty own the evaluation of the work that the student has contributed. They can determine if the work demonstrates the knowledge required of the assignment and of the course. However, Faculty may not override university policy (e.g. faculty wanting to award extra credit).
