FERPA Overview

The Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 is a federal regulation under the U.S. Department of Education. This act governs student and institutional rights and responsibilities for student privacy and covers what information pertaining to students' records should not be released to third parties without written authorization. FERPA protects the privacy rights of students and identifies both student and institutional responsibilities.

For compliance purposes, the University of Phoenix (UOPX) must carefully follow all of its documented policies and procedures. Activities are subject to internal and external audits.

Understanding the FERPA Release

FERPA protects the privacy rights of students and identifies both student and institutional responsibilities. Refer to the Student Notification of Privacy Rights for more information about FERPA.

Timeframe for the FERPA Release Form to update

After you submit a FERPA Release form on eCampus the form displays on your student record almost immediately. The release form will remain on your record permanently, unless you request it be removed. To remove a FERPA Release form from your record, you must complete a FERPA Rescind form.
