Unable to open Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets
Symptom:
When attempting to open a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet that was downloaded to the computer, the following error is displayed:
The file is corrupt and cannot be opened
Cause:
This issue may be caused by one or more of the following:
  • Microsoft Excel blocking files downloaded from the Internet automatically for security purposes
  • Internet browser corrupting file as it is being downloaded
  • File is damaged or corrupted
  • Microsoft Excel installation is corrupted
Resolution:
To resolve this issue, perform one or more of the following:
Unblock file in Microsoft Windows
  1. Save the file to your computer
  2. Right click the file and select Properties
  3. Click the General tab. (At the bottom of this window you will see Attributes and Security.)
  4. Click Unblock
  5. Click OK
  6. Reopen the file
Configure Microsoft Office Excel to not automatically block files downloaded from the internet (use caution when opening unknown files)
  1. Open Excel
  2. Click on Office Button or File menu
  3. Click on Excel Options or Options
  4. Click on Trust Center
  5. Click on Trust Center Settings
  6. Uncheck all of the items under Protected View
  7. Click OK
  8. Restart Excel and try to open the Excel Spreadsheet again.
Additional troubleshooting options
  • Restart computer
  • Clear cache and cookies in Internet browser
  • Download Excel spreadsheet again
  • Repair Microsoft Office
