I cannot open a Microsoft Office document directly from the Materials section of the Learning Activity or Assignment within a course through the Student and Faculty Portal.
This issue may occur due to one or more of the reasons below:
- A Microsoft Office dialog box is open somewhere preventing the file from being viewed
- Browser is not indicating the file has been downloaded
- Documents are not associated properly and opening with the wrong Microsoft Office program
- Microsoft Office is not activated or installed
- A pop-up blocker is preventing the Open/Save window from appearing
- Office Online extension installed (Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge)
To resolve the issue, please perform one or more of the following:
- Close all Microsoft Office documents (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc), then attempt to open the file from the Materials section again
Note: If there are no files open but the issue persists, check the Task Manager for running processes (e.g. word.exe) and click to End Process, if listed.
- Save the file, and then attempt to open from the saved location (e.g. Downloads, Desktop)
Note: If there is no indication the file is downloading, please maximize the browser to full view or check the browser's Downloads list by pressing the following keys:
- Apple Mac: Option+Command+L
- Microsoft Windows: Ctrl+J
- Confirm the file is associated with the correct Office product
- Verify Microsoft Office in installed through the Control Panel, Applications, All Programs, etc.
- Disable or add exception to pop-up blocker in the browser
- Remove or disable the Office Online extension
