Cannot Edit, Save, or Create Microsoft Office Files
Symptom:
I am unable to edit, save, or create Microsoft Office files and may receive the following error(s) or no prompt at all: 
This Modification is Not Allowed Because the Selection is Locked
Cause:
This issue may be cause be one or more of the following:
  • You are running an expired version of the Microsoft Office trial
  • You have not activated your Microsoft Office installation
  • The file may be in Protected View
  • Open in reading view
 
Resolution:
To resolve this issue, perform one or more of the following:
  • If you are running an expired Microsoft Office trial, you will need to replace it with a full version of Microsoft Office
  • If you have not activated your Microsoft Office software you will need to do so using the Microsoft Office product key associated with your installation
  • If the document is in Protected View click the Enable Editing button at the top of the document
  • Change Print layout view (button in lower right hand corner, next to zoom)
  • Try restarting the computer
Note: if you are not receiving a prompt such as Enable Edit, Protected View, or any other warning, perform the following: 
  1. Select File from the menu in the upper left
  2. Select Info along the column on the left
  3. Locate the Protected View setting to see if this is enabled
  4. Locate and determine if the PowerPoint file is in Protected View
  5. If the file is in Protected View, select and review the prompt and select Enable Editing or Edit Anyways
